Biography:

Growing up, cycling was pretty well the mode of transportation and living on the Cabot Trail it gave me an opportunity to ride different terrain from dirt roads, valleys, hills and mountains. I would on average log 100 to 125 miles per week. After moving to PEI in 1989, I kept riding, but things came to a halt when my daughter was born in 1993. Since then it's been downhill. I couple of years ago, I took up running and now I believe it's time to take the bike out again.

I hope to get back in cycling in order to regain the passion that I had for the sport years ago.

Biography: I've always had a bicycle and made good use of it for general transportation. Speed only briefly became an issue in the summer of '83, when I spent enormous effort trying to keep up with my older brother on the hills around St. John's. That year we did a two night "Tour d'Avalon" south of the city, covering over 300 kilometers of that very beautiful peninsula. I fell in love with bicycling there, and the relationship has flourished!

Doing time trials and road races with the Summerside Club has been a great motivator. By riding with this group I've achieved things that I'd considered beyond my capabalities. I'm looking forward to the Club developing a touring section; this island is the ideal location.

Biography:

I started at age 5 when my Dad found me down at the railway station. a fair distance from home on my three wheeler. My first bike was a 3 speed glider from Eatons in grade 5 with a great spring loaded seat, Used it for years. This was my ticket to the great outdoors and it brought myself and friends to many great fishing holes and outdoor spots. Every Saturday, we would vist friends on a farm 10 miles away. My interest is the recreational access to the quiet and scenery of the outdoors and love the rail trail. Past trail officer.

I just enjoying being out with other cyclists that will keep you going.

Biography:

I moved to Summerside last fall. This is my second year of road riding. Up until last year I was riding Cross Country mountain bike. Raced for a few years with a bike shop in Halifax called "The Bike People" Switched over to road biking because of an injured shoulder and wrist, but now I hardly ever take out my mountain bike. Looking forward to entering some races this year, already scheduled for the Red Island Relay and Triathlon in Dalvay. Hope to get out for as many rides as possible with the club, but my shiftwork sometimes makes it difficult to get out to scheduled events.

Biography:

I was born and raised in Summerside, PEI. Upon graduating from Three Oaks Senior High (TOSH) in 1985, I moved to Charlottetown to attend UPEI and have been there ever since, having met my future wife - Sue Knickle - at UPEI. We now have 3 children ages 9, 8 and 4. My career as a tax partner at Grant Thornton LLP really gets in the way of my cycling!

My foray into riding a bicycle is purely recreational as it was, like most kids, my primary mode of transportation as a kid. I do credit using a bicycle to deliver papers on my 90+ customer route as an adolescent for the marginal bit leg power that I do have. About the time I was 16 I became enthralled with weight training, even competing in some local bodybuilding competitions as a junior. Lots and lots of squats and deadlifts - this probably eventually helped my biking although I had the wind of a mud-packed whistle. I lived in West Covehead in the mid-90's and was using a CCM mountain bike with big knobby tires to go for 45 - 60 minutes rides (verrryyy slowly).

We moved to Stratford in 1997, and the notion struck me around 2001 to buy a road bike. My first road bike was a too large GT Strike purchased from Smooth Cycle. In the first two weeks I owned this bike I got something like 4 flats and tipped over twice getting used to those GD clipless pedals . . . I was finding Cycling very frustrating. But I loved it. The speed (everything is relative), the roads I could explore that I never explored before, it was great. So in 2002 I upgraded to a very sweet Trek 5200. At the time I was almost 230 lbs., so I figured I needed the stiff carbon fibre frame. I entered a few races, green as could be, and did terrible. I stuck with it though, and eventually found I was improving (or others were regressing?) and over a couple of years developed a little jump in the wheels that made racing a little less intimidating. Now at a svelte 195 lbs. I likely log around 150 km per week on the bike. I have also discovered something else new to be terrible at by taking up running in the last 10 months and do between 15 and 25 miles per week (subject to racing schedules). I have also have a medium-term goal of completing a triathlon in the next couple of years. Eight months ago I was terrified of water (wouldn't put my head under water!!) but am now swimming a couple of time a week at the CARI pool in Charlottetown. Nothing beats riding a bike though - its the ultimate.

With a busy career and young family it is difficult to fit in training. Evenings are almost always out so I very often bike alone very early (5:30 am) in the mornings - both during the week and on the weekends. The Summerside Cycling Club provides organized events that gives me a chance to get out with others to test our limits and have a great time. Since I am 45 minutes away I may not make all events, but I'll try to attend what I can.

Biography:

After growing up most of my life in Summerside and enjoying a large number of team sports (Hockey, Baseball, and Soccer) I made a decision in my early teen years to concentrate most of my time on Hockey and strive to play some higher level junior. After my Junior Hockey years came to a close and beginning my university career at UNB I met a number of friends who were beginning to take part in solo sports like running, kayaking and cycling and for me this was a great fit to fill to void of competitive hockey. I have just recently bought a road bike and am seeking some learning in training and specifics to become a better rider.

Biography:

I am a very novice speed cyclist. My main objective is to build up speed for short distances (between 20km to 40 km) as my primary interest is in triathlons. I cycle when I can and really dislike cycling alone! Therefore, I am not cycling much. One of my more memorable recent accomplishments occurred during a triathlon. At the Parlee Beach triathlon, I jumped from being 82nd of 90 when comming out of water to around 50th place at the end of the cycling. I was happy with that!

I was introduced to the bike at a young age, just a one speed but at that time, till I got my 1st ten speed it was I thought the best. When I moved to Kinkora that is where I got into Cycling, and became one of the Kinkora Kanucks a six member team that competed in the Red Cross Relays, and other relays for about ten years.

The highlight of my cycling was us the Kanucks Team finishing 2nd overall and 1st in the six man Division in the Red Cross Relay, and I had to do the final leg, it was a great experience. I had got away from the bike for a number of years, and I got back at it last summer (2005) for a while and rode with the Club once and that was it, I had to join it was great to ride with the group, looking forward to this season, and getting in some rides and having some fun with the club.

Jeff won a bike a few years back and started riding in the woods and the trails around Summerside. It became so enjoyable and such a stress reliever that Jeff "earned" himself a fancy new Trek mountain bike. He's on his second Trek now, looking forward to putting on some mileage with the Summerside Cycling Club.

Jeff enjoys the structured, scheduled rides that will allow a regular training ride with a group, and the ability to track ones (hopefully) progress.

Biography: Lived first 25 years of my life in Corner Brook NL...where everything is up or down! PE offers spectacular cycling opportunities with less struggle. Have done the "tip to tip" ...in bits, stayed in B&B's along the way. I have cycled Summerside- Tignish and return via the Confederation Trail in one day! My claim to cycling fame ends there, thus far. Oh yes. I did Biking For Breakfast 2009 from S'isde to C'Town...but couldn't catch Anne.

Biography: I was born in Surrey, B.C. and lived the first 8 years of my life in Terry Fox country [CoQuitlam]. Until University (Victoria, B.C.) I lived in central Alberta and went to college in Grand Prairie. At UVIC, married an Islander and now Miriam and I have been here for 9 years.

I started BIG into cycling, doing a 5,000 mile tour between Grade 11 and 12 with a friend of mine. Over 50 cycling days, we averaged 100 mile/day, traveling from Alberta to Southern Ontario and back. I didn't bike much after that until my next tour at 19, a 2500 mile trip from Grand Prairie to Victoria return (entrance requirements for UVIC involved interview and testing...so, off I went!) Then about two years later I started to do IT distance triathlons. In '87, I focused a bit more on cycling, and qualified for the Alberta Summer Games, placing 7th in the time trial, 6th in the road race, and overall 7th (lost placing in the Crit when my team mate crashed on the last lap (in second position) and took me out as well (in fourth position). Started back in Triathlon for '89 and '90, until my first of four children were born, and didn't start biking again until a few years ago. When I lived in Calgary (89-96) I used my bike to commute to/from work, about a 45-60 minute ride one way, depending on the head wind in the mornings and the thiderstorms in the afternoons!

For me, the main benefit of having a cycling club in Summerside is to be able to ride with other cyclists on occasion, and to have some scheduled events in which to participate. As the club develops, I would hope to see more recreational riders join and reap the benefits of this superb lifetime activity for health and fitness, as well as provide opportunities for younger and Masters-age cyclists grow in the sport (also for triathlon) PEI hosts the 2009 Summer Games, and for those young aspiring athletes about Grade 7 and up, it is amazing what consistent training for 3-4 years can accomplish (just look at what the group down in C'town are accomplishing!), and having such a long lay-off from competitive sports myself, I have re-acquired the desire to compete once again while still keeping family life in balance.

Biography:

Yes, I'm a newf!...without the accent and haven't lived there since I was 4. I did a lot of cycling as a youth on my CCM Targa 10 speed, for transportation mainly, no competition but I did complete many long rides. I have not cycled much since then until the 2005 Red Cross Relay. Now I'm cycling every other day on my mountain bike with a current distance up to 30K. I am currently building a road bike and will have it ready for the road for the mid-point of this club's season.

My most memorable moments I would say was during the 2005 Red Cross Relay and realizing my time was not bad considering I trained for 3 weeks on a mountain bike and rode a rental road bike for the first time on the 23K, predominately uphill course. I was certainly not ready for that, but finished no problem. It made me realize that cycling is, and could be for me, an excellent way to get fit. Now, I have improved and I am amazed at how my climbing is better and how far and fast I can go. Can't wait for my road bike to be ready!

I've had a 20+ year gap from cycling. My kids are older and they need/want the car more these days and that suits me. I even commuted home from Summerside to Kensington (only 16K) one day when they car was needed by someone, and I'm considering doing that more often - but the lack of shower in the AM might be a problem in this heat. My daughter is a runner and aspiring triathlete...so she motivates me to keep going.

I'm finding one of the benefits of this club is how great it is to be able to talk shop about the bike and about cycling and fitness in general. I forward to these organized rides.

Random Cycling Tip / Quote

"What was supposed to be a summer of fun on the bike turned into a year, then two years. It certainly wasn't a calculated plan to have a career as a cyclist."--Derek Bouchard-Hall
